Ancient Writing Projects

Background

Ancient writings are a major source of information for archaeologists. This projects will allow you to gain proficiency with an ancient language.

Project 1

Develop a chart explaining the history of the language under study. Include a short paper to accompany the chart.

Project 2

Develop a chart explaining the basic rules of grammar for the language under study. Include a short paper to accompany the chart.

Project 3

Develop a chart explaining the process of translation for the language under study. Include a short paper to accompany the chart.

Project 4

Develop a chart showing where the language is found. Include a short paper to accompany the chart.

Project 5

Prepare an exhibit defining the language in its historical and geographic context. Include a short paper to accompany the exhibit.

Project 6

Prepare an exhibit explaining the rules of grammar for the language. Include a short paper to accompany the exhibit.

Project 7

Prepare an exhibit of important nouns and verbs for the language. Include a short paper to accompany the exhibit.

Project 8

Prepare an exhibit of the development of phrases or writing in the language. Include a short paper to accompany the exhibit.

Project 9

Prepare an exhibit of the process of translation for the language. Include a short paper to accompany the exhibit.

Project 10

Collect samples of writings in the language. Include a paper describing each element of the collection.

Project 11

Collect specific words or pictograms along with a description of each, this should be in the form of a lexicon or dictionary.

Project 12

Collect translations along with descriptions of the process of each translation.

Project 13

Plan, execute, and write a paper about a field expedition to acquire more samples of the ancient language.

Project 14

Develop a computer program to assist in translation. Write a user's manual, a technical support manual, and a paper describing all aspects of the development.

Project 15

Develop a model for aspects of the grammar of the language, use that model to translate examples of the language that have resisted translation so far; does your model succeed in translation? In either case write a paper describing your efforts.
